60 questions to get to know me

I was looking for something different but when I read through these questions, I decided I liked them. I have been thinking a lot lately about getting to know other people better and wondering how well people know me or how I can let people know me better. A couple things in my life have sparked this – I am nursing a new crush on a friend with whom I definitely want to be better acquainted and while my friends are pretty strongly in agreement that I am a total type A personality (most of the time), my own mother doesn’t see it…. – so I am doing what comes naturally to me. I am blogging an interview with myself. A lot of these questions are regarding relationships, because this list was originally published as questions to ask in a new romance… but I think they are fairly revealing even without that so … enjoy, or don’t, or stop reading now before you get in over your head.

#1 Are you an animal lover or would you avoid keeping animals at home? This is kind of a weird one for me. I have an appreciation for living creatures, I don’t hate any ….okay, I hate snakes…. but I am a total cat person and have no real interest in owning a dog. My mister wanting a dog is not a deal breaker but I’m not going to go out and get one for myself.

#2 Do you like summer or winter? Summer.

#3 Would you diet or would you work out? Hypothetically, work out. I used to be very active and quite fit. Then I found myself in a place where activity had to be on my own, my idea, under my own motivation and I couldn’t make it happen. When there was always a group of friends going out dancing out or something or when I had to walk a mile plus every day just to get to and from class, it was much easier to stay active. But I eat (mostly) healthy and if you are active enough (which I am not), diets are kind of pointless.

#4 What do you wear to bed? Most of the time, the top half of microfiber pajamas. If I am staying with friends or have guests in my own home, I dig out the bottom half.

#5 What’s your favorite clothing brand? *shrug* I don’t really have one. The closest I could come to picking an actual brand name is Vans, which is shoes but if I am in need of new sneakers, I hit the Vans section first then move on to something else if I can’t find what I want there.

#6 When was the last time you cried? I don’t cry, much. Not on purpose. It’s not a “crying is weak” sort of thing. I just don’t cry. Especially not in an uninhibited weeping sort of way. I cry at sad movies or TV shows but I can’t even begin to pin down the “last time” I cried.

#7 Which color reflects your personality and why? Purple. Because it’s the color of royalty. HA Just kidding. I pick purple because it’s my favorite color but I think in applying it to my personality I would say it’s a mixture of red (passion) and blue (calm) and because it’s a deep, rich color.

#8 In the animal kingdom, which animal would you be? Cat. Actually, more specifically, a panther. I did some research years ago regarding spirit animals and figured out the panther’s personality matched mine quite well. Strong, predatory (kind of sucks to say but it can be true), but mostly laid back and carefree almost to the point of aloof. At least that’s how the panther is portrayed in spiritual terms.

#9 Do you like tattoos and body piercing? Love them. There are some I don’t find as attractive as others (I don’t think a septum piercing looks good on anyone, even the most attractive people but I don’t care if you have one) but for the most part I think they are awesome.

#10 How much PDA is acceptable? In my sorority, the week before we put a group through our initiation ceremony, we “redevoted” ourselves by observing what we called the three B’s – no boys, no booze, no blackballing. As for the “no boys” part, ladies with boyfriends or husbands were advised to avoid any activities they wouldn’t want their grandmother to see (others suggested nothing you wouldn‘t do in church…). For me, that’s a pretty decent yardstick for general PDA, although I know it’s not for some.

#11 How often do you take a shower? Every day, for the most part. I don’t always shower on my days off but otherwise, every day.

#12 What are your favorite magazines? I browse music magazines like Alternative Press but I never buy them. I hate paying for advertisements and in my college magazine writing class, I figured out that most magazines are 40-60% advertisements. Half the freaking publication is designed to sell me something that has nothing to do with the reason I bought the magazine in the first place (i.e. what does a Dior ad have to do with alternative music? That’s right, nothing.). I’ll buy a copy if there is something worth my trouble in it but mostly I’m cool with reading the articles on their websites.

#13 What are your favorite books? LOL The Dresden Files, Harry Potter, several but not all Stephen King, everything I have read (which isn’t everything) from Neil Gaiman…

#14 What’s your favorite movie? I actually probably have about 20 but my go to answers are Boondock Saints and Dead Poets Society

#15 What’s your favorite music you’re listening to these days? I have been listening to a LOT of AFI, Linkin Park, Kill Hannah, Twin Forks, Andrew McMahon (in all of his incarnations) and Awaken the Empire lately.

#16 What’s your favorite alcoholic drink? Hmmmmm simplest answer is vodka cranberry. But I like to mix things up (pun intended) by swapping out raspberry vodka – or apple or blueberry, something sweeter that would go well with cranberry juice. But I tend to opt for simple drinks made with hard liquor over complicated “girly” cocktails or beer or even wine.

#17 What’s your favorite vacation idea? Right now, I’m pretty focused on getting to San Diego for Comic Con and Orlando to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (and all of Universal Studios, but WWHP specifically).

#18 What’s your favorite food? I recently came to the conclusion that when I am at a loss for ideas, I tend to fall back on drunk college kid foods – tacos, cheeseburgers, pizza, wings, fries.

#19 Who’s your favorite actor? UGH really? Gut reaction, top three males and top three females: Jackson Rathbone, Milo Ventimiglia, Sean Patrick Flanery, Jena Malone, Kat Dennings, Helena Bonham Carter

#20 If you found a briefcase of money on the street, would you keep it? I would make every effort to find the owner. Which does not involve walking up to strangers and saying, “Did you drop this briefcase full of cash?” Because, invariably, someone did, whether they did or not. But I could take out ads in the newspaper in a couple different places (lost and found, missed connections, that sort of thing) requiring the rightful owner to positively identify the case and then, if after a certain time period (week?), no one had claimed it, decide the Fates wanted me to have it.

#21 Are you religious? Spiritual, I guess, for lack of a less trite answer. I am basically a non-practicing eclectic pagan.

#22 Are you a gizmo person? I don’t really know. I have gizmos, of sorts. I have a smart phone and a laptop and a Roku through which I listen to music and watch Netflix on the television instead of on my laptop…

#23 What kind of sport do you like? I WATCH hockey and skateboarding. I do none of it.

#24 Clubbing or candlelight dinner? Why are these my only choices? I guess “clubbing” although I’d much rather go to a concert than either of these things.

#25 Earth Hour or Fourth of July fireworks? If I knew what “Earth Hour” was I would be better equipped to answer this question but due to my lack of knowledge, I’ll go with the fireworks.

#26 Backpacking or a luxury hotel? Umm hotel. It doesn’t have to be “luxury” as long as it’s indoors.

#27 Christmas or Halloween? Halloween. Christmas has its merit but I am and always will be a spooky kid.

#28 Are you a morning person? Meh. I prefer night but I’m adaptable. I typically sleep about 4-6 hours a night anyway so I deal with whatever. I definitely feel like I function better at night but I’m not completely nocturnal.

#29 What’s your philosophy in life? “Take care of the luxuries, the necessities will take care of themselves.” Kind of. I mean, I pay my bills, I make sure I have food to eat but once all of that is taken care of, I don’t stress about going to a show or buying $60 shoes I can’t wear to work.

#30 When was the last time you were happy you lied? I’m not sure I understand the question.

#31 What comes to your mind when you think of your exes? Learning experiences. I don’t regret any of them and I don’t want any of them back but I can’t deny I learned something from each of them – some good things, some examples of what not to do, but definitely something.

#32 Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Ambivert with extrovert tendencies. Specifically, I get super drained when I’m away from people for too long. I get my energy from other people. Even if I’m around a group of introverts, I have been known to go for a five day stretch on ten or fewer hours of sleep, total, just because I was around people from whom I could draw energy.

#33 What’s your idea of romance? Attention to detail. It can be something as simple as surprising me at work with MY Subway sandwich order (because I almost always get one of two sandwiches and always with the same toppings), if you pay attention and get the details right, that is 1000 times more romantic than any flower or box of candy in the world.

#34 Would you like to live in the countryside or in a metropolitan area? Metro. See the introvert/extrovert question. Give me people and bustle and chaos any day of the week.

#35 When did you lose your virginity? 17

#36 What’s your favorite body part of the opposite sex? Hands. And I am wildly attracted to that guy who wears a medium t-shirt with room to spare, looks like a starving waif until he takes that t-shirt off and reveals a body cut from solid granite.

#37 What’s the wildest thing you’ve done sexually? I’m sure there is something that fits this category that goes beyond one-night stands but I can’t really think of anything off the top of my head.

#38 Do you think money can buy happiness? I think having “enough” money can go a long way toward alleviating the stress of daily life and less stress is synonymous with happiness so ….by extension, yes?

#39 The world would be a better place if…? We could stop judging one another for things we can’t control. Or things we can, frankly. But things like race, gender, sexual preference, sexual appetite, are definitely not reasons to judge one another.

#40 Do you have any social causes that are close to your heart? Women’s rights, gay rights, mental health reform

#41 What do you do over the weekends? Reality: work, hang out at home. Ideally: work, go out with friends, although I kind of disregard “weekend” as a valid concept. (Some, not all) Hair salons are open 7 days a week, concerts happen 7 days a week, restaurants are open 7 days a week, why do we confine things to weekdays and weekends?

#42 Would you mind if I had a best friend of the opposite sex? I don’t have a problem with my partner having friends (best friends or casual acquaintances, either one) of the opposite sex. The only time that becomes a problem is when you allow (or even lead) me to believe that “going out with Sam” means Samuel, not Samantha. It may be contradictory to my progressive feminist philosophies but I feel like, even if there is nothing physical between you, having a relationship with another woman that you feel like you need to keep a secret or lie about is cheating.

#43 Which was the worst phase in your life? Hmmmm middle school sucked a lot but very little remains of who I was then. The couple years following breaking up with my ex were horrible.

#44 What was the happiest moment in your life? I honestly don’t have an answer for this question.

#45 Do you judge a book by its cover? Since that’s where they typically put the synopsis, yeah, I do. LOL Metaphorically speaking (judging people on appearance) I try not to.

#46 What’s your political stance? Flaming liberal. Pure anarchist but I also don’t believe that is humanly possible so as left wing as you can get, probably. I haven’t really laid out every one of my stances on every political question to see which side of the aisle I am on but for the most part, pretty liberal.

#47 Do you watch porn and what’s your view on it? I pretty much think it’s completely ridiculous. I don’t care if anyone else wants to watch it but I’m probably not going to….at least not with a straight face.

#48 Do you believe in karma? Yep.

#49 Do you plan your life or live for the moment? I’m pretty type A so I plan a lot but when I let go of all of that and allow myself to be spontaneous I tend to have a lot of fun.

#50 Do you think life is fair? Pretty sure, no.

#51 If you were marooned on an island, what are the five things you would take with you? Um, a helicopter, a boat, a jetski, music and my best friends?

#52 Would you sulk or would you confront? Depends on the issue but I tend to be a brooder. Hazards of being a textbook Scorpio.

#53 Are you addicted to anything? Not literally. I REALLY LIKE my Dresden Files books (books in general), I buy a LOT of nail polish and Softlips, I like Starbucks a lot…

#54 Any current news that’s caught your attention? Sadly, no. Outside of the nightmare that is our political climate. I have grown so out of touch in recent years.

#55 What are your favorite apps that you use often? Facebook and Whisper are probably my most used. And IMDb.

#56 Are you an optimist or a pessimist? Realist. I know that’s a cop out but it’s the truth. I am pragmatic enough to be able to see several possible outcomes in many situations so if the majority of possible outcomes is negative I’m going to sound more pessimistic.

#57 What do you have for breakfast? Whatever I feel like. I tend to gravitate toward sausage patties, over-easy or sunny eggs and fried potatoes (hashbrowns) but sometimes I’ll opt for a waffle or oatmeal with brown sugar and fruit. Or fruit….

#58 How often do you make your bed? Not often. Every couple weeks. Whenever I wash my sheets. Otherwise I see no point. Why go to the daily trouble of fixing something just to destroy it again later that same day?

#59 If you knew you were right, would you take a stand even if you know you would make a scene in public or would you let it go? Depends on the issue. How important is making the scene? Getting charged for something I didn’t order in a restaurant, let it go. Getting broadsided in a parking lot, make a scene. I’m very much a choose your battles kind of girl.

#60 What’s an absolute no-no in a relationship? Hiding things (which is not necessarily the same as lying…can be, but not necessarily). If you hide things, especially things involving relationships with other people (relationship, here, means anything), I will assume you have something to hide. Going back to the friends question, if you tell me you’re going out with Sam but never tell me Sam is a Samantha and never correct me when I assume otherwise, I’m going to have a very hard time believing that Sam is no more than just a friend when I do find out about her (and I will). If you are upfront with me and say, “I’m going out to the bar with Jim and John and Samantha,” we’re all going to be better off in the end.

And so, there you have it. Now you know more about me (than you probably wanted to know.
